Gut Health Symposium

Sensus, the manufacturer and marketer of Frutafit inulin and Frutalose oligofructose, recently organized a symposium on gut health and the benefits of prebiotics and probiotics at the 19th International Congress of Nutrition. The ICN is held every four years and draws several thousands of nutritionists.

This year, the congress took place in Bangkok and attracted about 400 participants. Sensus wanted to highlight the impact of the activity and composition of gut microbiota on human health and well-being. Various speakers reviewed the properties of prebiotics and probiotics as a tool to affect these parameters. Prof. Ian Rowland (Reading University, UK) presented data on prebiotics for gut health and well-being, whereas Dr Gérard Corthier (INRA, France) focused on probiotics and gastrointestinal diseases.

Prof. Yazid Manap (Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia) discussed the effects of prebiotics on mineral absorption and the final presentation — on the relevance of prebiotics in infant nutrition — was given by Dr Carey Walker (Mead Johnson Nutritionals, USA). The symposium was chaired by Emeritus Prof. Jo Hautvast (Wageningen University, the Netherlands and chairman of the Sensus Science Board) and Prof. Wandee Varavithya (Mahidol University, Thailand). The presentations were followed by a discussion with an important contribution by Prof. John Cummings (University of Dundee, UK) who stressed the unique features of prebiotics as tools to affect the activity of gut microbiota and, thus, human health.
