Heart disease can be less likely to cause fatalities with increased intake of vitamins, it is claimed.
Consumption of vitamins as supplements can help to reduce the risk of cardiac death, it has been revealed.
NutraIngredients reports the findings of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at the University of Washington.
The nutraceutical business publication notes that vitamin E in particular has been "much maligned" since being labelled as a risk factor for all causes of death.
However, its reputation could be restored in light of the research centre's findings.
NutraIngredients explains that consumption of 215 mg or more of vitamin E per day over a decade can be linked with a 28 per cent lower chance of death from cardiac disease.
Meanwhile, vitamins as a whole were seen to reduce heart disease-related deaths by 16 per cent.
The nutraceutical business periodical previously reported that antioxidant pigments, administered in conjunction with vitamins C and E, can help to slow the rate of vision loss in elderly individuals.
