Post-menopausal functional food could lower body fat by containing conjugated linoleic acid.

Functional food for post-menopausal women could help to lower their levels of body fat by containing conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).

Nutraceuticals World reports the findings of research conducted at the Department of Human Nutrition at Ohio State University.

Studies were carried out to assess the impact of CLA on post-menopausal patients with type 2 diabetes.

After 16 weeks, those who had received the CLA supplement were seen to have lower levels of body fat, lower body mass indices and reduced total adipose mass.

However, their lean body mass remained unaffected by the therapy, indicating no reduction in mass of preferential tissue.

The potential of CLA as a supplement in functional food products may seem greater in light of the fact that none of the participants were on activity plans or weight-loss diets.

Nutraceuticals World previously reported research conducted by the Population Health Research Institute which found a mild causal link between alpha-linoleic acid consumption and heart disease.

However, the researchers added that the link between heart disease and the majority of individual ingredients as causing factors is too modest to state with any conviction.
