Functional ingredients derived from cranberry seeds are being investigated by juicemaker Ocean Spray.
Cranberry juice manufacturer Ocean Spray is investigating the possibility of deriving functional ingredients from the fruit, reports Mass High Tech.
The beverage producer believes to have discovered a yellowish oil with properties that may help to treat breast cancer.
While it may not look like cranberry juice, Mass High Tech reports that the oil has a faint taste of the fruit.
It has been developed following investigations into whether functional ingredients could be produced from cranberry seeds.
The publication adds that cranberry carcasses complete with seeds are a by-product of Ocean Spray's main juice-making business.
And the latest development comes amid forecasts from BCC Research that functional beverages, currently selling in similar quantities to functional foods, could be set for a brighter future.
By 2013, it is believed that more functional beverages will be sold than either functional foods or supplements.
This follows an anticipated compound annual growth rate of 10.8 per cent from 2008 until 2013 for the functional beverages market.
