Functional food tailored to a person's genes is becoming more achievable.

Advances in science are making bespoke functional food more possible, it has been claimed.

Next Generation Functional Food and Drinks: Opportunities in Personalized Nutrition from Reportlinker.com notes the need among elderly people for solutions able to combat deficiencies in their nutrition.

However, with "personalised nutrition" advancing on an ongoing basis, the report adds that the possibility to create bespoke functional food is growing.

Meanwhile, it adds that nutritional issues are not only a concern for the elderly, in light of worries surrounding childhood obesity levels.

Despite the possibilities presented by bespoke functional food, the study adds that the majority of people are reluctant to allow their diet to be personalised based on their genetic makeup.

Fewer than 50 per cent of people would welcome such an opportunity in France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Korea and the UK.

The findings are based on research initially compiled in November 2008 and now available from Reportlinker.com as a 95-page report.
