Sandwiches have no future in the food and nutraceutical business, research indicates.

A new report could provide important insight into the future for companies in the nutraceutical business.

Research organisation NPD Group has published A Look Into the Future of Eating, an analysis of current eating trends and how they may continue in the coming years.

With this, it claims, food manufacturers - which could include those in the nutraceutical business - can position themselves for success.

As well as preparing for future market opportunities, NPD Group says, firms can also minimise their exposure to risk from declining industry segments.

In the report, one area where a decline is anticipated is sandwiches.

The analyst places sandwiches in the "quick-assembly lunch and dinner foods" category, which is forecasted to perform poorly in the coming decade.

However, organic foods are anticipated to grow in importance by 41 per cent - more than twice as much as the second-placed category, restaurant meals eaten in-home, which NPD Group predicts will rise by a fifth in importance.
