The nutraceutical business magazine notes the publication of research sponsored by Danisco into the effects of its functional food supplement HOWARU Protect.
HOWARU Protect is aimed at children around the age of four and contains probiotic ingredients Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis.
In the study, 326 children aged from three to five were given either Lactobacillus acidophilus alone, both ingredients or a placebo over a period of six months.
During that time, those who received one or both of the ingredients were seen to miss fewer days of childcare and require fewer antibiotics to treat cold and flu symptoms.
The monotherapeutic treatment reduced incidences of fever by 53 per cent, while the combined therapy reduced instances by 73 per cent.
