New Canadian organic food rules have been welcomed by a functional ingredients manufacturer.
A producer of functional ingredients derived from hemp has welcomed the introduction of tougher organic food laws in Canada.
The new Organic Products Regulations were enforced on July 1st and offer the public a "guarantee" about the foods they eat, according to Manitoba Harvest.
Manitoba Harvest itself produces a range of organic produce including hemp oil and hemp seed butter, as well as supplying functional ingredients to other manufacturers.
"Parents of young children are trying to start their kids off right and give them the best chance to be healthy and thrive," says Mike Fata, president and co-founder of the functional ingredients firm.
"And organic agriculture offers that opportunity to minimise exposure to chemicals."
Under the new regulations, Manitoba Harvest products are permitted to display the Canada Organic Seal which marks them as 95 per cent organic or more.
Meanwhile, products of 70-95 per cent organic ingredients can identify themselves as such on their list of ingredients, but may not use the seal.
The company also cites research by Dr Darrell Tanelian, published in Natural Pharmacy Magazine, which identified hemp as "nature's forgotten nutraceutical".
